Opening in summer 2017, major Barbican exhibition Into the Unknown: A Journey Through Science Fiction is a genre-defining exploration of one of popular culture’s most celebrated realms. Featuring work not yet shown in the UK – including original objects and artwork from The Paul G. Allen Family Collection – concept art and models from films Godzilla, Stargate and Dark City; and original manuscripts from iconic authors such as Jules Verne – this unprecedented show encompasses music, film and contemporary art to present a new, global perspective on science fiction.
Contemporary artists such as Soda_Jerk and Eija-Liisa Ahtila will feature in the show alongside new commissions from designers including Territory Studio, who draw upon their motion graphics work for The Martian (2015). More than 200 books from around the world, as well as iconic film clips, pulps, adverts, comics, posters and robots, will also be on display.
Into the Unknown will be organised into four key chapters – Extraordinary Voyages, Space Odysseys, Brave New Worlds and Final Frontiers – that will each explore classic narratives of the genre in new ways.
Splice Festival is back for its second edition, taking place over the bank holiday weekend 26th – 28th May 2017 at East London’s multi-arts centres Rich Mix, Red Gallery and Kamio.
Part of the EU funded AV Node network, Splice brings together over 40 international artists to celebrate the diverse field of audiovisual performance, including live cinema, AV remixing, VJing, video art and projection mapping. This year sees another diverse programme with headline act Coldcut, Award-winning Mira Calix and DJ Food among the performers alongside a host of educational talks, networking and satellite events.
“Sparrow night” is a term from folklore that describes a night storm featuring intense sheet lightning. The exhibition name sets off a trimester of programming focussing on the senses. Sparrow Night features two- and three-dimensional light-based works, including experimental painting, projections, kinetic installations, interactive sculptures, and innovative textiles and design.
The depiction of light has always been central in representational art. Sculptors have always considered the play of sun and shadow in relation to their three-dimensional forms. Spurred by scientific studies of colour and light and the growth of artificial illumination, for a century now many artists have regarded light itself as a main focus.
For the fourth year in a row, onedotzero hosts a programme of talks as part of the Convergence Festival. Conducting the machine features artists and educators who use machine learning, robotics, wearable computing and prosthetics to design performative systems and interactive experiences. Introduced by Shane Walter, Creative Director at onedotzero, the session will include keynotes presentations from three speakers ending with an audience Q&A.

Convergence has entertained & educated over 100,000 attendees across London since its inception in 2014. The 6-day festival, held annually in March, facilitates an active dialogue around performance and technology, and provides a platform for unusual projects, one-off special events and collaborations featuring emerging artists and established pioneers.
Convergence Sessions creates a festival hub where a diverse range of artistic practitioners share their insights, ideas and techniques in a creative, interdisciplinary atmosphere, through a series of talks, workshops and demonstrations.

The Story is a one-day conference about stories and story-telling, to be held at The Conway Hall, London, on Friday, February 17th, 2017.
The Story will be a celebration of everything that is wonderful, inspiring and awesome about stories, in whatever medium possible. We’re hoping to have stories that are written, spoken, played, described, enacted, whispered, projected, orchestrated, performed, printed – whatever form stories come in, we hope to have them here.
The Story is not about theories of stories, or making money from stories, but about the sheer visceral pleasure of telling a story. Whether it is in a game, a movie, a book, or a pub, we’ve all heard or told or been part of stories that have made us gasp, cry or just laugh.
There have never been so many stories, never so many ways to tell them. The Story will be a celebration of just a small sample of them.
Kinetica marks its 10 year legacy as a leading platform for international new media art with a ground breaking anniversary exhibition that explores the many dimensions of illusion, transformation and metamorphosis.
Ten artists will be selected through an OPEN CALL to exhibit in Kinetica’s 10 year anniversary show. The selected artists will be shown alongside some of the most renowned kinetic and new media artists working today.
Step into virtually real works of art this January.
We’re starting 2017 with Virtually Real, a collaborative pop-up project between the virtual reality platform HTC Vive and our contemporary art school, the Royal Academy Schools. Graduates Adham Faramawy and Elliot Dodd, together with third-year student Jessy Jetpacks, have been selected to create works of art using HTC Vive. This virtual reality technology lets you experience hundreds of simulated worlds, where the normal rules of gravity don’t apply.
The artists will be using software like Kodon and Tilt Brush by Google, a palette that lets you paint in virtual 3D space to produce installations that you, the visitor, will be able to move through and interact with. You’ll also be able to see their creative processes from start to finish with HTC Vive’s playback technology. As a world-first, we’ll be 3D printing these artworks and exhibiting them, so you will have the chance to interact with them both virtually and in real life. You’ll also be able to try your hand at creating a virtual reality masterpiece of your own.
Adham, Elliot and Jessy all have a background in working with virtual technology, apps and multimedia, but this will allow both them and you to experiment in the relatively unchartered waters of virtually made art.
