Considered one the most influential artists working today, Anish Kapoor (b. 1954, Mumbai, India) works in a wide variety of scales and formats, and in a range of media including pigment, stone, stainless steel, resin, wax, earth, and most recently, silicone. Over the last four decades, he has created a remarkably inventive and resonant body of work layered with artistic, cultural, and personal associations. Anish Kapoor: Descension brings one of Kapoor’s most viscerally arresting installations yet to New York for the first time. Creating a dynamic negative space that descends into the ground, Descension is a massive spiraling funnel that harnesses the evanescent material of water. Disturbing the familiar boundaries of our world whilst pushing the limits of materials, the work invites visitors to experience the sheer wonder of intense perception, in a quintessential New York park.
or his first project as 2017 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow, DeForrest Brown Jr. organizes the US premiere of Quantum Natives’ expansive sonic universe. In their debut performance of Grace Nexus, the collective forms a new episode in the rhizomatic Quantum Natives universe, extending their online surface to a live setting. The artists will unite to use video game engine technology, paired with software-based sound design, to sculpt birds-eye and panoramic experiences of merging fictional landscapes, physical, and online spaces, which in turn will be projected in ISSUE’s theater and online.
Grace Nexus takes place as a discrete portal to the Quantum Natives world with the audience positioned as explorers of the “post-scarcity” condition of limitless online content and the idea of grace, the loving gift of divine favor, as a prescriptive measure for reorienting in our increasingly enmeshed online/offline experience. Grace Nexus emerges as a seance or incubator for the Quantum Natives community and an act of tourism into their world.
Conceived by artists/musicians James B Stringer (Brood Ma, Werkflow) and Awe IX (Ornine, Yearning Kru), later integrating Rachael Melanson’s (Rosen) pOrtals’ project and DeForrest Brown Jr’s “Context Collapse,” Quantum Natives is an ongoing expression of online personas and a coherent cartographic experience that suggests an organically growing document as narrative. Established in 2013 as an online world-building platform, the collective focuses on digital music and visual art, all of which takes place in a collaborative, ever changing artwork represented as an online map.

Public Art Fund announces Please Touch the Art, a major new exhibition by Danish artist Jeppe Hein featuring 18 playful sculptures designed specifically for public interaction at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Engaging visitors through pieces that are both accessible and surprising, the show includes three distinct bodies of work: Appearing Rooms, a series of “rooms” formed when water shoots up from the work’s gridded base forming “walls” that appear and disappear throughout the day; a large new Mirror Labyrinth, featuring equidistantly spaced vertical elements at varying heights made from mirror-polished stainless steel that multiply the surrounding landscape through myriad reflections; and 16 new Modified Social Benches that upend the idea of a traditional park bench with their unconventional angled, curved, twisted, and bent forms. The most comprehensive exhibition of his work ever presented in public space in the United States, Jeppe Hein: Please Touch the Art is on view May 17, 2015 – April 17, 2016 at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
On view throughout the space, Please Touch the Art extends from just south of the Manhattan Bridge down along the waterfront to Pier 6.

FACETS is a conversational based creative un-conference with a focus on underrepresented voices and demographics in STEM and art.
FACETS grew out out of a need for a new type of conference and a new type of conversation. Art, interactive technology, new media and game design are making innovative, beautiful things and are using similar tools and having similar, ground breaking discoveries and conversations but not with each other. What can a game designer learn from the linear mathematics used from procedurally generated music? What can the new media academic teach the creative technologist? How does technology inform storytelling, and how will video game design change cinema? The aim of FACETS is to create a cross disciplinary conference that facilitates conversation, mentorship, innovation, and ideation across these disciplines. We all make amazing things, let’s make them together.
Silent Lights is a light installation by Urban Matter Inc created over a pedestrian pathway that responds to the large amount of traffic noise on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) at the intersection of Park Avenue and Navy St. Since the noise is invisible but ever-present, we created an installation that visualizes the noise. This allows the pedestrians to see the noise in various patterns versus just hearing it.
