The atrium in the Dallas Hilton Anatole hotel is Texas-big, lofting more than 150 feet in the air. Owner Harlan Crow — legendary real estate investor and eccentric collector of ego-size dead-dictator statues – needed to fill it.

What happened next was perhaps the most ambitious kinetic sculpture ever commissioned, the Nebula.

Conceived and designed by Berkeley, California, artist Reuben Margolin, and built and installed by Mark Sabatino’s Gizmo Art Production in San Francisco, the sculpture seems to swim, as a motor on the ceiling rotates a massive truss holding 445 stainless steel cables connected to 15,000 reflectors, shimmering like jewels.

Re Evolution is a large scale industrial art and technology festival located in the heart of creative Los Angeles – a futuristic ode to the World’s Fairs of yesteryear. For one weekend in the spring of 2011, we will present a multi-dimensional intelligent playground, an ideal stage for spontaneous learning and collaboration.

This is Cincinnati on Sunday, September 24th, 1848—162 years ago today. The picture, a daguerreotype taken by Charles Fontayne and William Porter, is so fantastically sharp you can step right onto the streets, onto the riverboats, peek through windows, explore rooftops as if you had slipped into the 1840’s with a pass key. Zoom in and take a look for yourself.
